Aleut - Sugpiat similarities
I have been trying to find a picture of an Aleut mask for a few days now and so far I am not having any luck. I am so fascinated with the Aleut culture because it is my culture. We did not really talk about it much in class, but I think it would be wonderful to try to find something to share with many other people so they can see what kind of background I come from. I am a Unangax dance group leader from Sand Point, Alaska. When people ask me about my culture I fall in to great depth of what kind of regalia we wear and the beautiful headdresses that each young woman makes. I also tell many people about the dances and the songs. Which is why when I went to the museum, the masks with the songs behind them fascinated me the most. Making a song/dance depending on something that is significantly constructed is a lot of work. I have made one song/dance with many people and it was a very long process. The Sand Point dancers are working on a new song with the help of some Atka dancers. We are hoping to have it done by next summer. Hope it will soon be shared with everyone.

How interesting. What do Aleut masks look like? Are they similar to Alutiiq masks?
